Tourism That Gives Back to the Planet

Travel for LiFE (TFL) is a global movement inspired by Mission LiFE — Lifestyle for Environment — envisioned by India's Prime Minister during the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow. It seeks to inspire both tourists and tourism businesses to embrace straightforward measures aimed at conserving natural resources, preserving biodiversity, boosting local economies, and safeguarding the socio-cultural fabric of local communities.

Endorsed by the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, Travel for LiFE supports the development of smart, responsible, and sustainable destinations — making India a global blueprint for conscious travel.

"Travel should leave destinations better than we found them — not just for us, but for every generation that follows."

Three Pillars of Sustainable Travel

Every responsible journey rests on three core commitments — to the environment, to culture, and to local communities.

Environmental Responsibility

Reduce pollution and waste, conserve natural resources, protect wildlife habitats, and choose eco-friendly transport and accommodations. India's fragile ecosystems — the Himalayas, Western Ghats, Sundarbans — depend on every traveller's mindful choices.

Socio-Cultural Respect

Honour local customs, religious traditions, and dress codes at heritage sites. Engage authentically with communities rather than as a spectator. Protect the identity and dignity of the places you visit, preserving living cultures for future generations.

Economic Benefit for Locals

Spend with local vendors, artisans, and homestays. Hire local guides. Buy authentic handicrafts over mass-produced souvenirs. When money flows into local hands, communities flourish and have a real stake in preserving their heritage and natural wealth.

Simple Actions, Lasting Impact

These are the everyday commitments that each traveller can make to become a force for good on every journey through India.

01

Use Public & Green Transport

Prefer trains, buses, and CNG/EV vehicles over petrol or diesel cars. Reduce your carbon footprint one journey at a time.

02

Say No to Single-Use Plastic

Carry a reusable water bottle, bags, and utensils. Refuse plastic straws and packaging. Leave no trace at every destination you visit.

03

Hire Local Guides

Local guides bring destinations to life with authentic stories and knowledge — and every booking directly supports families in the community.

04

Shop from Local Artisans

Choose handcrafted souvenirs from local markets and artisan arcades. Every purchase preserves a traditional craft and a livelihoods.

05

Eat Local & Seasonal Food

Consume locally available, seasonal, and traditional food. Include sustainable options like millets. Support local farmers and reduce food miles.

06

Conserve Water & Energy

Turn off lights and ACs when not in use. Take shorter showers. Report leaking taps. Small habits in hotels and homestays add up to a huge collective saving.

07

Respect Wildlife & Nature

Never feed, touch, or disturb wildlife. Stay on marked trails in sanctuaries. Do not collect shells, corals, or plant specimens from protected areas.

08

Share Feedback & Inspire Others

Provide constructive feedback to tourism service providers. Share your responsible travel story to encourage friends, family, and fellow travellers.

How to Travel Responsibly in India

Responsible travel doesn't require sacrifices — it just requires awareness. Here's how to make every trip count.

1

Research Before You Go

Learn about local customs, dress codes, and cultural norms before visiting religious and heritage sites. A little knowledge shows respect and enriches your experience immensely.

2

Choose Eco-Friendly Stays

Look for certified sustainable hotels, eco-lodges, and community homestays. These businesses invest their earnings back into local conservation and community welfare.

3

Pack Light, Pack Right

Bring reusable bags, a water bottle, and a zero-waste kit. Avoid overpacking — it means less fuel on flights and trains. Leave no rubbish behind at any destination.

4

Photograph Respectfully

Always ask permission before photographing people, especially in rural and tribal communities. Respect signs that prohibit photography at religious or sensitive locations.

5

Explore Off the Beaten Path

India's lesser-known destinations — Ziro Valley, Hampi, Majuli Island — are just as breathtaking as iconic spots, with far less pressure on local ecosystems and communities.

6

Leave a Positive Review

Rate and review local businesses, guides, and eco-stays honestly. Your feedback drives quality improvements and helps other conscious travellers make better choices.
